If there is enough interest I am thinking about running a weekend of road riding (training?) in Devon, in about 1 months time. We'd drive down on Friday evening and stay at the Drewe Arms. Either in a cheap bunk room or the not so cheap B&B.

On Saturday we aim to leave around 1000 for 3 hours and have lunch probably at the Warren House Inn then take a couple of hours to ride back.

Sunday, leave for a much gentler ride at about 1000 aiming to get back to the Drewe for midday. Then we can nip down to Fingle Bridge for lunch and a romantic stroll before heading back to London.

    http://www.thedrewearms.co.uk/default.html
    http://www.warrenhouseinn.co.uk/
    http://www.finglebridgeinn.com/

£75 for a bed in the bunk room & a cooked breakfast
    £207 for the B&B option.

These prices are based on a full van of 8 people.

Nice idea. I'd be interested, but it'd be dependent on which weekend.

OOOOOOh. Devon training camp. Sounds exciting.

I cannot commit as my back is a bit spazzy ATM, but would be all over this like hippy over a box of cherry ripes*.

aaah, sounds lovely and looks beautiful. Again dependent on dates (and persuading matthew - at the moment I have an "I'm not saying no...") but if I can then we'd both certainly be interested.

Would love to come but am unsure about my healing process and then fitness recovery. Childcare issues are, however, sorted.

what I'd love is somewhere that's a good base for biking but also has lots of attractions for non-biking spouses/young families.

in my case, I'd need an affordable yet lavish campsite-cum-spa hotel with on-site Scandinavian-quality childcare. maybe somewhere on that bit of Yorkshire between Whitby and Dalby, so you can throw some nice off-roading/trails in with the long coastal road rides.

it would be hot, too, very hot, with freshly-squeezed orange juice and a masseur waiting for you at the end of every ride.... reverie continues for several hours while everyone else gets on with their business

Some of us are thinking of doing the Ronde Picardie late in the year, possibly staying in a gite for the weekend....

Have been on Caspar's MTB Devon weekends, which were excellent. The Drewe is a great pub in the evening with a good breakfast, and their bunks are newish and clean.

not since I was a boy scout.

actually Wales is on our list of potential family holiday destinations. Mrs BP was looking at places in Kent on t'internet last night but almost all were prohibitively expensive in peak season (she's a teacher so we have to go then).

I forgot to add road-bike hire shop to my list of requirements - travelling on the train with kids and baggage means I can't do BYO.

I'd have a bunk… and I'd definitely come on the first and last weekend in March. Third weekend (20th) I have a wedding to go to; second weekend possibly going to a Gran Fondo (but it's up in the air at the moment)!

I'm sure this is going to get tricky and you're just going to have to pick some dates and some will be disapppointed… but that's my 2p.

    Cheers for sorting this!

Rollapaluza work has narrowed this down pretty tight. Lets go for the 2nd weekend in March which is the 12th - 14th.

Leaving London Whitechapel, E1 at 1800 and Earls Ct, SW5 at 1845 on Friday and leaving Drewesteignton at around 1500 on Sunday so arrival back into London will be between 1900-2000.

I will need to collect money from all of you coming to pay the Drewe Arms, but we will start with the obligitory list that I will up date as people pay up. Please write your name followed by the collection point (E1 or SW5) and finally the amount payable £75 for the bunkroom £207 for the B&B.

My bike trailer is open aired, I have plenty of pipe lagging for the precious amongst you.

Caspar, are there only 8 bunk places? I am having trouble finding out if my other ride commitment is going to happen or not. If you ran out of space in the van, I could drive down instead, but I definitely couldn't afford the B&B.

Hoping to have a definitive answer early next week.

    Cheers,

There has been a change of plan.

The Drewe has no bunkrooms available on the 12th & 13th so I have changd things around a little. Now we are going to stay in the Fox & Hounds just as good and right on northern Dartmoor.

I am going out tomrrow morning to recce the route from the F&H. We'll still end up at the Warren House Inn for lunch, we'll have approached it from the other direction instead. Hopefully the weather is going to be good and I can take some photo's.

There is plenty to do from here on Sunday, a short (possibly recovery) ride in the morning followed by a short walk to the pub by Lydford Castle for lunch.

The cost will be the same.

I rode most of the route yesterday (60miles), it is very tough, I reckon that less roughly 10% of the route is flat.

I managed a huge 12mph on average for the first four hours, my fitness has dipped recently due to a reoccuring back problem and I also rode most of the way round with a blocked nose but nonetheless I am no slouch! The visibility over the moor was about 10m due to the fog so no photo's.

If the weather is good this will be a mangificant weekend, if the weather is bad we will just have to wallow in the sense of achievement we will inevitably feel after this hard ride!

I will post a profile here soon and .mmo files if anyone coming has a GPS.
