Whatever. They copied Macs as usual.

@RPM - it was all part of a planned day out to see the dinosaurs and shit in Crystal Palace Park. Currently, alternate weekends are no-bike weekends. Only 18min on the train from London Bridge to Penge West, and 10min on the bus from Old St to London Bridge.

how were the CP dinosaurs? I didn't even know they existed until they popped up in a book I was reading to the kids recently (Topsy and Tim Meet the Monsters), and have been thinking of taking them there one day soon. sounds like the cafe could be a good bet for family lunch too.
  3.
The dinosaurs are quite good - but you do feel a bit like you're viewing them in 1850. The farm is open from noon till 4pm - that's quite good too. I liked walking around the National Sports Centre architecture - still in use, but all the concrete structures are in decline due to 30 odd years of relative neglect, so a bit Ballardian.

We fucked off the park café and walked all the way up to the top (to the Norwood Triangle) to Café St Germain instead - clearly very kid friendly (as well as cyclist friendly). I love the French(ish) ambience, and all of our food was excellent - good value, generous portions, fresh ingredients.

Basically, from Penge West, we walked up the park via the dinosaurs/waterfalls, had lunch on Crystal Palace Parade, then walked back down the park via the sports centre, zoo, and playground. About 3 hours total. Pleasant day out.
  4.
Thanks - looks like the perfect itinerary for us. The CSG sounds very good. We will be following in your footsteps soon I think. Have you been to 'Discover' in Stratford? We're going Monday to catch the 'pirates' stuff before it finishes. It's my birthday 'treat'. gee, thanks guys.

    Love this, btw:
    Posted By: BringMeMyFixa bit Ballardian
and it led my via google to this, which I'll have better look at when time allows. Think I've come a bit late to the Ballard party.
  5.
Not made it to the Stratford thing yet. Looks like we're running out of time.
  6.
you mean for the pirates? they always have good stuff on, and it's fun just for a visit even without special events/shows etc. not the nicest of locations, though, it must be said.

I think a Ballard party would be in its prime when late. Probably kicks off just as most people are leaving.

If this was lfgss people would already be organising a "Power Ballard Ride" frilly shirts, big hair wigs and leather tassled jackets at the ready. The spoke card would already be done.

I'm teaching a postgrad course on Ballard in March. One of my favourite bits is from his memoir when he talks about riding his bike through Shanghai as a kid –- it's lovely.

oh yes, I read that last year. Super book. I'd forgotten the bit about his early adventures by bike.

I must confess to not having read any of his novels - on the to-do list - but whatever you thought of Crash, I'd still urge you to read the memoir (Miracles Of Life).

back on thread: spotted/was spotted by Plurabelle getting on the tube at Chalk Farm. Two RLZPers, not a bike in sight. What's the world coming to?
  8.
I like his early short stories. 'The Subliminal Man' is perhaps the prototypical anti-consumerism piece.

'High Rise' is good for a laugh, and 'Concrete Island' too. Snooping around the darker corners of our urban psychology. Not too wanky like some of his later stuff.
  9.
^that's my opinion anyway, but I'm not the ex-literary-agent-cum-English-lecturer. I'm just some cunt.

For what it's worth* I agree. I'm a massive fan of Ballard but I can't bring myself to read his later stuff and I've tried a few.

Don't tell anyone but I had to look that word up.

Is Ballard some sort of Deity in the literary world? I know very little of these things. I have however got three books about writing and often pretend to myself that I'll write a story one day.
  10.
He hasn't shifted as many units as Cartland.
  11.
Come to think of it, "Cartland" sounds like the latest offering from Ballard. It'll be dystopian - that's a no-brainer - and probably take a macrocosmic look at romance, painting society as pink, frilly, obese, and in a constant state of denial over allegations of self-pleasure, whether it takes the form of an oral cakeathon or a wank in the conservatory dismissed as a Parkinsonian episode. There will also be concrete, loneliness, and loneliness made concrete.

My mate wrote a book about a bicycle messenger in the US. I think after review the main character changed profession.

I went through a phase of writing the opening paragraph of a book everyday. That was when I thought I was sane but looking back I clearly was still as fucked up as I was before only I'd stopped realising it. I'll dig some out and send them to you for a laugh.

He's definately not working in that picture, unless he is only carrying very small packages in the pockets of his jersey.

I'll ask the guys on Friday at the 10th Anniversary Goldsprints when (if) he used to work for creative.

harrong: Euston Road tonight. Funny spot it was.. he passed me (it's ok, it's a rest day today :)) and I followed for a bit. He was signalling the holes in the road. At the lights I roll up to him and say "you're the only bloke in London I've ever seen signal the potholes" and then I spot the Rolla cap. Nice to meet you! Where are those Cherry Ripes man?

Scherrit: Picked up some cranks for Rach at t'other flat and decide to ride down Pitshanger. New Rolla (has he joined yet?) Scherrit was heading out. Master timing or what?
