When I have time to source parts and build it. I'm in no hurry.
I will have 9 bikes in my studio flat tomorrow...

Very disappointed with today. 3 degrees centigrade, 15-20mph wind and a rolling course.

At one point I had to unclip as a gust pushed me into the curb.

With blood in my throat and my vision failing I only managed a 28:37, I left nothing on the course that was all I could manage.

    It can only get better.
  1.
Don't beat yourself up about it. Sounds like a reasonable time for the conditions, and good experience. You'd probably knock a minute off that if you did it again tomorrow.

    What did the über-spacemen manage?

There was a vet in front of me (didn't look over 40) his seed time or whatever it is was a long 26 and he did a short 25. In still conditions I suspect a minute would be about right. It's still this thing of the hills though, I can hold a very decent speed on the flats and getting there is no problem.

    I'll get there.
  2.
That's why you need those VO2Max intervals I mentioned (they'll improve your FTP anyway).

In all TTs, you'll need to go supra-threshold due to:

    - overcooking it at the beginning
    - starting into a headwind
    - getting up short hills whilst keeping on top of your gear
    - realising you're riding 0.5mph faster than your minute man, and needing to make a push to get past and clear
    - the last mile or two

    But you know all that.

Hoping my rollers will turn up today. I am The Indoor Cyclist™. Welcome to my world.

Rollers now too? I've lost interest in my turbo again. It's all about real world cycling now until after ToI and maybe the TdF trip.

Sounds like a shit day for a TT, Ant. That's ok.. you know you can do better.
I can't wait until I get to the point where I start slowing down and feel like there's no improvements to be had.
That's when it must get evil.. dragging yourself out early Sunday knowing you're not gonna best your time.

I can see that you are right about VO2 max. I guess I just needed to see it for myself :)

I'm cooked now, my legs are really dead and my throat feels like I've been smoking 40 cigs. I might go on the turbo.
  3.
Might as well smoke 40 cigs.

hippy, I'm resigned to many hours of indoor riding these days. Needs must. Rollers for variety, and sorting out my pedalstroke which has been atrophying since a winter almost exclusively on the turbo.

It's all so much more bearable since I bought this:

I just fitted some Diamante Pro 20mm tyres and removed my bottle cages. So, even if I'm slower, it should buy me 30 seconds bonus :)

I felt pretty rubbish today. Went out a bit fast, as usual, told myself to slow down, as usual, but seemed to ache when last 25 I didn't. And I didn't seem to be able to get the power I wanted.
I think I've strained glutes, quads, triceps and neck muscles. So much for the 40k warmup. Really should've ridden and stretched yesterday.
Anyway, I need to analyse my power data before final judgment because even though I should've saved 30sec with aero tweaking, the course was different and the wind was very much different.
Instead of grinding out 340W on the outbound leg and then smashing it on the way home.. this course went north on Amersham road then U-turned back past the start to another U-turn, then back past the start for a final U-turn before heading to the finish. The key here was the wind didn't seem to let up in either direction!

When I left fastest time was a low 59 set by Willesden rider Meurig James. There were two other 59's on the board.
I reckon I should've made the top 10. Not sure what happened to Richard Jerome, he was 2min in front of me but he'd bailed at the half-way point for some reason.

    Let me get that Powertap..
  5.
Sounds like you were going as well as before, taking into account all the turns in today's course (but then, I don't suppose you got held up at traffic lights this time).

I fucking smashed it on the track today*. Smell my cheese.

*I also stacked it at 1mph - heel caught between chain and chainring FAIL :(

How the heel did you manage that?
  6.
    Cos I'm a total fucktard.

I pedal a bit heel in anyway. Had moved my right cleat further forward this week, and obviously set it a bit too much heel-in.

Low speed infield manoeuvres, chain grabbed heel/ankle bit of shoe, into chainring, wobbly attempt to back pedal out of it, collapse onto muddy grass, right in front of Sainsbury's Ed.

So you didn't work quite as hard today.

Do you think you'd benefit from trying to push your average cadence up to 90rpm, and riding one gear lower in any given situation?

I'd guess your CV fitness will be improving enough to facilitate it; but then again, maybe with your leg strength you could even consider going the other way...

    Another great ride though :)

BMMF: Ignore the cadence values. I don't run a cadence sensor so they are 'estimates' from pulses detected at the hub, ie. rough. I certainly didn't hit 174rpm :)
I do feel my cadence has dropped but it was successful in the last TT. Maybe I should fit the sensor after all and see what is really happening.

Perhaps the wind put me over the edge and I was never on top of my gear? I was in a lot more pain today (muscle strain - glutes especially) and I was forced to finish a lot stronger since I was feeling guilty about my shit ride and was watching the distance count down and pushed hard at the end unlike the last one that snuck up on me. Averaged 345W for the last 3min leg.

I didn't go for a ride yesterday so might have started with stiff legs.. although 40k should've sorted it out. It was colder today though. I really don't know.. just guessing.
  7.
Ah well, you can't have good legs every day. I sort of did today, without realising... until I looked round and no-one had managed to bridge the gap I'd created.

Maybe there's no such thing as good legs. Maybe there's just a spectrum of bad legs, with it being a case of who's got the least bad legs on the day. That's what cycling feels like to me most of the time :S

    I've not got many stats

    Max speed = 33 mph
    Max cadence = 101 rpm
    Max gradient 7.5%
VAM = 517.9m/hr (which is shocking but I don't know how that is affected by gradient. I have seen 1200m/hr in training)
Average speed = 20.8 (I didn't press stop for a couple of minutes)

Yeah.. I saw the name on the start sheet and commented to Roger (Westerley) about him. One of the other guys introduced me to him and I said I'd track him down and kill him.. I mean I'd ask my old man if we are related. ;)
He said he has relos in Canada and I vaguely recall my old man saying the same thing (he's been into family tree stuff since granddad died).

bikepusher: I've been training (at the drinking) for years. It's not something I'd recommend unless you are very committed (or ready to be committed).

I do wonder what I could do if I wasn't such a glutton for everything.. but I'm happy to live a happy balance.. of excess :)
