You can use this thread to have a single post containing your TT calendar for the year - just edit the same post as and when you send off new entries, change your mind about entering, or get results, etc.

It would be good if at least the beginning of the thread consisted of TTers' 'official' slots, and any random posting was kept below all that. So it might be worth getting your 'holding post' added to the discussion now.

Cut & paste from my post below to copy the format.

Perhaps ride reports can be put in separate threads... and cross-posted to the main club site too.

Having this info here might also make life easier when filling in entry forms :)

BMMF wish you good legs for tomorrow. Weather should be ok too.

Would be up for a 10 and 25 mi in May to benchmark form and maybe a 2up for fun. It seems a bit of a science to get through listings of events.

    Yeah good luck mate.
  1.
Thanks, both. Hoping the drizzle holds off, and mentally prepared for the 12mph headwind on the 'fast' top section of the course. Oh, and the hills on 81" fixed :)

Definitely need to get a 2 or 3-up done this year...

Well, never done it before and it's not so much of a calendar as a single entry but here goes:

    08/03/09 - Charlotteville CC - 12mile - ? - 38:23 - 11/21 - winning time: 32:28

that's assuming that Chertsey isn't such a horrific experience that it puts me off!
How do you go about pacing yourself? Or for such a distance do I just go as fast as I can? Do you monitor av speed on bike computer or is that poor form?
    • CommentAuthorhippy
    • CommentTimeFeb 27th 2009

As fast as you can? No.
Say it's your commute distance - think about how fast you can ride that.
Start out easier than you think.. the legs WILL be hurting before the end, trust me :)
If you've got anything left before the line with a mile to go, then smash it up.
I use HR as a guide (now power since I have a Powertap) but you can also just set a goal speed and work from there.
Adjust it on the day though since it could be easier (tail wind) or harder (head wind) than you estimated.
I wouldn't worry too much though since it's your first.. good pacing comes more with experience than due to any funky technology

So would you recommend putting computer on bike so that I've got an idea of my speed?

'as fast as I can' I probably didn't mean that! I guess I was thinking of a fast lap I did in Richmond Park a few weeks ago - was pushing a steady pace but with a constant burn in my legs. Do I aim for that, or just below and then give it more in the last mile if I can? Like you say, I guess after doing one I will have more of an understanding of how to pace myself. Wicked! I can't wait...

Good luck, stelle. I got the invite to that event as well, but am otherwise engaged, unfortunately.

hippy's summed it up really. And just to reiterate, DON'T SET OFF TOO FAST!!! Otherwise you'lll get to 3 miles and feel like you're dying. Ideally you should experience that feeling closer to 9 miles ;)

If fasteddy's won it in a 32.46, that's almost exactly a 22mph average. A 36min time would be a 20mph average. Last year's slowest time was a 15.5mph average. So you definitely don't want to be blasting off faster than 22mph (unless it's downhill).

Also, as hippy said, the course/weather can have an effect on your pacing; but in ideal conditions, top riders often aim for a negative split, i.e. they ride the second half slightly quicker than the first.

You'll probably find you forget about your computer apart from stolen glances at the current speed.

And if you really start panting, and find that even with focus you're having trouble bringing your breathing back under control, just change into a higher gear, brace your arms/lower back, and ignore the grumbling from your legs :D

    You're not wrong there!

Thanks for the advice. Because I never usually ride with a computer I have no idea what speeds I ride at. I'm starting to understand that to be prepared & to train effectively you need to have data...but also I know a 10 mile route that I do regularly and I know the pace I normally ride it so I can work with that.

When I TT I watch the computer constantly. I have a speed target and I stick to it.
  2.
You're very numbers orientated though, Ant. Horses for courses, init.

I like races where the 5 riders in front of me are all a little bit slower than my potential, and I can raise my game and pick them off one by one. Doesn't happen much ;(

I might be watching the HR monitor on flatter courses this year, but it would've been ridiculous on the Hardriders!

  5.
    Ooooh, yes please.

Who do you think I need to contact about an East London one? Some of the districts list an explicit handbook person on the CTT site, but I suppose for the others, I can just email any of the officers...

Hainault HIlly's going to be fun next week. Swathes of gravel EVERYWHERE, and not so much hundreds of potholes as thousands of craters :O

The TT was hilly...now I know what 'sporting' means I'll come prepared in the future! 38:23 was my time.

I was aiming for 18/19mph average and that's what I managed, so am pleased about that. Was difficult to monitor since we were cutting it fine getting to the start line and I didn't have time to work out the computer (lame, I know) so I just had current speed to go by. The first couple of miles were tough, my breathing was all over the place and I was a bit panic-ed by how slow I was going and it was windy, but settled into it, and I guess it was ok in the end, for a first go!

I'm not sure what I need at all. I'm a 56 road size though so it shouldn't be far off that. Positioning for TT machines is all foreign to me anyway so it'll be a bit experimental.

I'm just looking at my power data and shaking my head..
    Normalised Power: 355W
    Average Power: 342W

That's a FUCKLOAD more than last year! Last year's only 25 on a faster course in May..
    318W Norm
    306W Avg

I checked and other than the large increase it doesn't look like a calibration failure. Guess I'll have to do another for verification now.
  8.
    Bored with TTs now.

Probably do some of those evening ones in the summer mentioned on the other forum's TT thread.

The Lea Valley MG event is on a different course (fucking Newmarket HQ!) on a busy Saturday afternoon. Fast course and everything, but really, I can't be bothered with the logistics. As it's the Easter Saturday off work, I'll probably just pop down HH in the morning instead.

TT training is good for base/build period fitness, but my anaerobic system has had a shock this week with a few more shorter intensive efforts.

If I was a self-harmer, I'd be into quick deep cuts, rather than drawn-out lengthy scratches.
